Canon EOS-1D X Equals Wow!!!

Canon EOS-1D X pro dSLR replaces both 1Ds Mark III and 1D Mark IV

Professional photographers around the world are getting ready to cough up $6,800 come March 2012. That’s when the newly announced Canon EOS-1D X professional digital SLR is slated to start shipping. The new full-frame dSLR not only replaces 2007’s similarly priced full-frame 1Ds Mark III, but Canon has also ramped up performance so much that the camera will also replace the speedy 1D Mark IV aimed at sports photography that sells for a couple grand less and uses an APS-H sized sensor.

Besides packing the camera with dual Digic 5+ processors, Canon boosted speed by dropping the resolution to 18-megapixels (3 megapixels less than the 1Ds Mark III’s 21.1 megapixels, but 2 megapixels more than the smaller sized 16-megapixel sensor on the 1D Mark IV). In doing so, Canon hopes to match the image quality of the 1Ds while shooting at even speedier rates than the 1D Mark IV, with a continuous shooting speed of 12 fps (vs. 10 fps in the Mark IV) or even 14 fps in JPEG-only mode. The lower resolution should provide not just faster continuous shooting and data processing, but it should also result in lower noise in images. The camera’s standard ISO sensitivity range is already broad, from ISO 100 to 51,200, but can be set as low as ISO 50 or as high as 204,800 in enhanced modes.

In addition to the two Digic 5+ image processors, the 1D X also includes a third Digic 4 processor that’s dedicated to just metering and autofocus control. The brand new autoexposure system uses a new 100,000-pixel RGB metering sensor and the new autofocus system sports a whopping 61 AF points. The AF functions now have a dedicated menu tab for improved accessibility, and there’s even a built-in guide to provide advice on which settings to use. By default, the camera uses phase detection AF information, but it also offers a new Intelligent Tracking and Recognition option that uses face-detection and tracks recognized faces. A new shutter design promises both durability and precision and helps reduce camera vibration.

Other key features include:

  • A multiple-exposure feature, which lets you combine up to nine separate images into a composite image, in-camera
  • Enhanced 1080p HD video with new compressions and longer recording time
  • Automatic splitting of movie files that exceed 4GB; continuous recording up to 29 minutes 59 seconds
  • Manual audio level control and wind filter
  • External stereo mic input
  • Re-designed exterior and ergonomic button configuration (optimized for both horizontal and vertical grip)
  • Dual CF card slots
  • Built-in Ethernet (1000BaseT) port

The Canon EOS-1D X is scheduled to ship in March 2012 for an estimated $6,800 (body-only).

AT&T announces record iPhone activations

AT&T on Friday confirmed that it has activated a record number of iPhones. “As of 4:30 pm ET Oct 14th, AT&T had already activated a record number of iPhones on our network – and is on-track to double our previous record for activations on a single day,” the company said in a statement delivered to BGR via email. “These record volumes may produce slower activations for some customers, though our systems continue to run at record levels.” Customers have been complaining of difficulties with activations on various forums around the Web. Considering the carrier has already doubled its single-day activation record, it’s pretty impressive that the system is up at all. It should be noted that some customers are reporting better luck with activating their new iPhones on the device rather than through iTunes.

Steve Jobs 1955 – 2011

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Steve Jobs, the Apple founder and former CEO who invented and masterfully marketed ever-sleeker gadgets that transformed everyday technology, from the personal computer to the iPod and iPhone, has died. He was 56.

Apple announced his death without giving a specific cause. He had been battling pancreatic cancer.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today,” the company said in a brief statement. “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”

Jobs had battled cancer in 2004 and underwent a liver transplant in 2009 after taking a leave of absence for unspecified health problems. He took another leave of absence in January — his third since his health problems began — before resigning as CEO six weeks ago. Jobs became Apple’s chairman and handed the CEO job over to his hand-picked successor, Tim Cook.

By the time he turned the reins of the company over to Cook, Jobs had become one of the business world’s greatest comeback kids.

The company he founded, was fired from and then returned to had gone from also-ran to technology industry leader. Under Jobs’ intensely detail-oriented leadership, Apple created several iconic products, including the iPod, iPhone and iPad, that have changed the face of consumer technology forever.

The iPhone Event Is Officially October 4th

Well, we pretty much knew it already, but now it’s Super Apple Official: the next iPhone will show up on Tuesday, October 4th at
Apple HQ.

It’s a nice looking invitation, ain’t it? The icons are perfect: the date is the date, of course, the Maps icon is where to show up
(Apple’s campus), the clock icon provides the time, we assume (10 AM PST), and the phone icon? That, paired with “Let’s talk iPhone”
might be a clue that Assistant—Apple’s rumored talk-control iOS feature—is going to take a big chunk of the spotlight.

2112 – Hmmm 2 phones? LTE phone? iPhone 5? iPhone 4s? iPhone 4G? Steve Jobs back? Oh hell who knows but know one thing I will be
wathcing just like the rest of the world.

JP Morgan “Apple will release iPhone 4+ & iPhone 5″

Apple will release two new iPhone models this fall, the “iPhone 4 Plus” and the iPhone 5, according to a note to investors issued by JP Morgan on Monday. JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz reiterated reports that the iPhone 5 will feature global roaming with support for both CDMA and GSM networks. As various other rumors have also suggested, Moskowitz believes the iPhone 4 successor will be thinner and lighter than the current model. In addition, Moskowitz said Apple will release another model with “some improvements” over the current iPhone 4. He has dubbed that model the “iPhone 4 Plus” instead of the “iPhone 4S,” a commonly used moniker for the potential entry-level device. “We believe that investors should start to prepare for more positive surprises related to the quarterly run rate of the iPhones in the near- to mid-term,” Moskowitz said, noting the addition of the iPhone 5 to Sprint’s portfolio and the introduction of the iPhone 4 Plus on China Mobile and China Telecom could create a large boost in iPhone sales.

Sony’s Wearable 3D Home Theater

File this one under crazy/awesome/but really more crazy. This fall, Sony will be releasing personal 3D home theater headgear for one viewer at a time. Called the HMZ-T1, it’s your chance to finally quash your Geordi La Forge envy.

You connect the half-helmet, half-goggles contraption to its own gaming console-sized processor, which in turn attaches to your Blu-Ray player or gaming rig, and voila! The two 0.7-inch OLED screens—one for each eye—create an immersive 3D experience. Because each display is independent of the other, that should eliminate the horrible, heading inducing cross-talk that other 3D technologies (like active-shutter or glasses free) bring. Each screen packs in a resolution of 1280×720, and it’s reportedly like looking at a 750 inch (62.5 feet) screen from about sixty feet away. At the same time, your ears are treated to some surround sound candy.

While it sounds like the HMZ-T1 delivers a high-quality 3D experience, I can’t help but wonder if this is too crazy to catch on. I mean, it would absolutely kill the social element of watching a movie with someone. I could see it being extremely appealing to 3D gamers, but there isn’t any mention of it having an accelerometer or gyroscope built in, which means (unless I’m missing something), turning your head and looking around wouldn’t change your view at all. A feature like that would make it a gamer’s wet dream (like what the Virtual Boy could only dream of being).

And if the pure weirdness doesn’t turn people off, the price certainly could; it’s set to come out in November for Japan and will cost 60,000 yen (aprox $800 USD) when it drops. That’s more than a decent-sized and spec’d LED TV. There’s a distinct possibility that it could be out in the US and Europe for the holidays, but that’s just rumor at this point.

Fallen Apple: Steve Jobs Resigns

Steve Jobs has resigned as chief executive officer of Apple. The company has promoted chief operating officer Tim Cook to the position of CEO and said that Cook will join the company’s board of directors. Jobs will become Apple’s chairman.

Here is a copy of Jobs’ resignation letter:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple”s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple”s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Apple board member Art Levinson, chairman of Genentech, issued the following statement on behalf of the Apple board:

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company. Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

We have no additional details yet on why Jobs is leaving, although the spot assumption is that it’s related to the liver disease for which he received a transplant in 2009. The fact that Jobs is taking over as board chairman, rather than resigning that seat too, would seem to indicate that his condition is serious but not imminently debilitating.

2112 – A move that was somewhat expected but nonetheless still hard to swallow. After seeing his condition from the iOS 5.0 press conference I wondered if his health was declining. Sadly I think he might be losing his battle or been given a time left which is hard to think about. For many of us Geeks Steve Jobs represents everything we hold dear. Lets pray that indeed his health improves and that Apple has Chiarman for many years to come.
